SW12 Subwoofer by Aerial Acoustics

Back in the July issue of CE Pro magazine (pg. 131) we reviewed a home-theater system from the Massachusetts-based company Aerial Acoustics. The system was comprised of a pair of the company's 5B freestanding speakers, a pair of LR3 speakers used as rear surrounds, a CC3B center-channel speaker and a SW12 powered subwoofer. What was not touched upon in great detail in the review was the performance of the SW12 subwoofer, which could arguably be the best subwoofer in the industry.

The subwoofer incorporates a single 12.5-inch driver that is powered by a 400-watt Class A/B amplifier, a single-band parametric EQ, low- and high-pass filters, IR control, balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs and automatic-signal sensing. Depending on its room environment, the sub is capable of playing down to 20Hz, and it excels with both music and movies. What makes this subwoofer special is that it is one of the fastest and tightest sounding subwoofers on the market and it is as adept at reproducing double-time drum tracks as it is on reproducing the low-frequency rumble that consumers expect from their favorite action movies.

In addition to that, it also doesn't sweat playing at high volumes for extended periods of time. Aerial offers the sub in a choice of finishes, and according to company officials, if consumers want the ultimate low-frequency experience, two SW12s can be integrated into a system to produce a clean and deep stereo image.
