Audio in Multipurpose Rooms

Being located in the beautiful islands of Malta may sometimes have its disadvantages. Since the islands are so small, space is a premium, so every room has to be designed carefully in order to exploit its full potential. Bedrooms usually double up as study rooms and entertainment rooms for the kids, while the home cinema is usually found in the living room together with a good number of other home electronics. Although other countries may have all the space they need, making good use of your assets is always a good idea.

Equipping the room for a multitude of uses can be quite a challenge especially if the owner is a home cinema enthusiast and demands high quality audio. Until recently this situation presented quite a head ache and necessitated various compromises. However, it seemed that the home cinema system always took precedence in speaker placement since it is the most demanding in accuracy (in order to achieve the right audio "image").

On the other hand, playing with a game console like Play Station, X-Box, etc. requires different speaker placement since the listening position and the audio demand may be different. The room may also be needed for enjoying music whilst reading, playing cards or a board game, or simply relaxing. These different scenarios present a challenge for the installer and anxiety for the homeowner.

Recent technological developments have afforded much more flexibility and can help solve this problem relatively easily. For example, SpeakerCraft's TIME (Theater In Motion Experience) speakers fit very nicely to meet this demand. These ceiling-mount speakers can be activated by means of a remote to pop out of the ceiling and turn to a pre-programmed position according to the particular function that is required. With a little imagination and integration into an automated system, one can achieve a multitude of functions with just the touch of a button and have the right audio ambience for whatever the situation. When finished, the speaker can be tucked back into the ceiling as if they weren't there.

Demands for room usage may not necessarily be directly linked to the audio quality. Aesthetic requirements may sometimes trump technical demands and the installer may find it difficult to incorporate speakers in certain rooms. This can lead to conflicts and sour compromises. Again, technology and innovation can come to the rescue. Speakers from manufacturers such as Artcoustic look like an ordinary frame and include your choice of painting or image. These can save a lot of headaches for the installer and resolve disputes arising from the different priorities of family members, while still delivering the audio quality required.

Audio may sometimes be the most difficult component to integrate in a house and it requires a good amount of thought, attention to detail and a decent budget. However, the returns are highly significant and can make life at home more enjoyable. Although today's technology may not solve all the problems that an installer or homeowner may encounter when installing an audio system, it sure lessens the pain of compromise.
