It's a given that the technology used in a dedicated theater in a 12,000-square-foot, $7-million-dollar model home should be impressive. But to the firm that built the residence, it was equally important that the overall presentation be inviting to potential customers.
Since the design had to allow for whatever changes the future homeowners might make to the room, Manny Andalia of AVL PRO, the Naples, FL–based company that designed the theater, approached the project looking to complement, not compete with, the room's architecture. "We collectively create an environment utilizing the latest technology and marry it with the aesthetics and overall feel of the space," he says.
To give the theater a casual feel that's conducive to kicking back with a movie, music or a good book, the front projector was hidden within the ceiling. A frame was applied to the screen to help it blend in with its surroundings; however, the future owners of the house are free to remove the frame for a different look.
Special attention was paid to the three equipment racks that were placed in the theater vestibule. The builder constructed doors at the rear of the rack so that the backs of the equipment could be easily accessed for service and upgrades, while the heating and cooling contractor added plenty of ventilation to keep the equipment from overheating.
Last but not least, AVL Pro added a two-way wireless touchpanel so that the builder’s sales team, the prospective buyers and the home's future owners could easily control every aspect of the home theater.
